Granny Knows Best – Natural Cleaning Solutions
In pre-1940’s Britain, natural cleaning products were widely used around the home to clean dirt, grime, and common household stains.
Over the years, with an increased offering of chemical-based cleaning products, at such a low price, more and more people turned to chemical agents to help solve their cleaning problems.
But, in the last year, we’ve noticed a new trend for natural cleaning products which are kinder to the environment (and our wallets!). And here at Vileda, we’re huge fans.
Armed with some basic, store cupboard ingredients, it’s simple to make natural cleaners for use around the home. All you need is some white vinegar, salt, baking soda, olive oil and citrus fruits.
Discover some of our favourites below.
Our everyday cleaning solution
With a few natural cleaning products you can make an everyday, all-purpose cleaner – perfect for all hard surfaces around the home.
Simply mix ½ cup of white vinegar, 2 TBSP of baking soda and a few drops of lemon. Mix this in a clean, recycled spray bottle and get ready for clean surfaces all week long.
When life gives you lemons…
…make your showers shine!
Remove hard water marks from your glass shower door by rubbing them with half a lemon before rinsing.
Make your bath gleam
Water rings on your enamel or porcelain bathtub?
Wet the tub before using half a grapefruit sprinkled with salt to gently buff the surface. Don’t use this method if you’ve painted your bathtub as the salt could scratch the paintwork.
Make scratches disappear
Scratches can age wooden furniture in an instant. Turn back time with our natural remedy.
Mix ¼ cup of white wine vinegar with a ¾ cup of olive oil, dip a clean cloth in the mixture and work into the surface. Repeat the process and watch as the scratches seem to fade – leaving you with a surface that shines.
Get shiny stainless steel
Dull looking hob, sink or stainless steel surfaces? Use Olive Oil to bring back shine.
Once your hob is cold and turned off, apply a tablespoon of olive oil to a cloth and gently buff the surface for a few minutes – the oil helps to penetrate the small grooves and pores of the metal.
Tackle your tiles
Vinegar is a staple when it comes to natural cleaning solutions.
Remove grime from your tiles by soaking a sponge or cloth in white wine vinegar and wiping the tiles until clean. You can even infuse in some lemon peel for a citrusy smelling solution.
Say Goodbye to Tea and Coffee Stains
Leave mug stains on your furniture for too long and they can become difficult to remove.
But don’t worry, with the help of one simple ingredient you can get rid of the stain for good. Mix a small amount of water with some bicarbonate soda to create a paste and, using a non-scratch sponge, work the paste into the stain for a couple of minutes before rinsing and thoroughly drying the area.
Melt away oven grease and grime
Oven cleaners are notoriously strong, so if you want a natural alternative – look no further.
First, you’ll want to prep your cold oven by removing any chunks of baked on food. Then spray the oven with water so it is damp, before pouring in a thick layer of baking soda. Leave the baking soda to sit for a short while before wiping up the paste with a clean cloth. 100% natural and it really works!
When it comes to cleaning it seems Granny really did know best!
