Your Cleaning Questions Answered
Last month we asked you to send your most niggling cleaning questions and put our cleaning experts to the test.
From clothes stains to funny smells, we’ve had it all, and now we’re here to answer them. Read on to find out the solutions to all of your burning questions!
How do you get sweat stains out of clothes?
You know what they say, when life gives you lemons…use their juices on your laundry!
Honestly, next time you have a stubborn sweat stain, try mixing freshly squeezed lemon juice with the same amount of water, scrub the solution onto a stain and leave in the sunshine to dry. The lemon and the sun combined turn into a natural, less harsh bleach. Once dry, pop your clothes in the washer as usual and voila!
How do you keep black pants/jeans black?
This may be the obvious answer but, the best way to keep your pants black is to simply not wash them as much; where you can, remove any chalky marks from things like makeup with hot water and a sponge, or spot-treat any stains with an instant stain remover.
When the time comes to actually wash your black pants, turn them inside out to minimise colour loss caused by friction from rubbing against other clothes, then choose a short, delicate cycle – warm water tends to break down fibers and fade your clothing faster, so stick to cooler washes!
How do you get strange smells out of furniture?
Sprinkling baking soda on your upholstered pieces will absorb any lingering odours you may face in your living room. If possible, let your furniture sit outside for the process for extra efficiency, but make sure to keep them in the shade as baking soda and sun can bleach your fabric.
If any smells have intoxicated the entire room, leave a bowl of vinegar in the room for a day, it’ll soak up all those unwanted scents!
How do you freshen up smelly shoes?
A quick fix here for you, simply pop your shoes in a plastic bag and place them in the freezer overnight – the cold will chill out the bacteria and remove all smells. If the freezer trick doesn’t work, put a healthy dose of baking soda into your shoes and let the powder absorb the odour overnight.
SQUEAKY CLEAN FLOORS
What’s the best way to clean Vinyl floors?
The key with vinyl floors is to keep them relatively dry. You can still use traditional mops, but make sure you wring them well so they aren’t too wet. Our EasyWring & Clean Turbo Mop is ideal for this, with a built-in wringer to allow you to easily get rid of all of that excess water.

What’s the best way to clean laminate floors?
Laminate flooring has become extremely popular over the past few years. It’s a great (and much more affordable) alternative to wood but it does require some TLC when it comes to cleaning – unlike real wood, laminate floors cannot be refinished, so it’s worthwhile taking extra care to keep your floors spick and span.
Putting mats by the doors and pads under heavy furniture is a great place to start. When it comes to cleaning them, just make sure you opt for dry mops over wet, like our ActiveMax Flat Mop. Wet mops can result in excess water on the floor, leading to warping over time – did anyone else instinctively start singing ‘let’s do the time warp again’ reading that?

How can I keep control of pet hairs?
As with anything in life, it’s always better to be proactive over reactive! Where you can, make sure you groom your pet at least two to three times a week. It might sound like a lot of effort but it’ll only take a minute or two – nothing compared to the time it takes to remove those pesky pet hairs!
If you do end up with some rogue hairs around the house (which you inevitably will), use a pair of rubber gloves and simply wipe them along your furniture and BAM! No more hairs. For larger jobs where there’s more hair than couch, it’s time to get serious – use your vacuum nozzle to swiftly capture it all in one go.

How do I remove that horrid grout that builds up in bathroom tiles?
We feel you on this one, trying to remove dirt without scratching your beloved tiles is tricky! But we’ve got a tip to make life a whole lot easier. First, rinse down all your tiles with your showerhead so they are wet before applying baking soda, then with a toothbrush gently scrub small sections. Baking soda loses its abrasive properties in water, making it a less chemically harsh way of cleaning.
For an even better finish, try the Vileda Windomatic Power – a cordless window vacuum perfect for shower doors and tiles.
How do I remove really stubborn toilet stains?
First of all, start with some (you guessed it) baking soda and mix with white vinegar to form a natural cleaning agent that wears away stains.
Pour 1 cup of vinegar into your toilet bow and swish it around with the toilet brush to cover the inside bason. Leave this to sit for about a minute. Next add 1 cup of baking soda and then add another 1-2 cups of vinegar. The solution should fizz and create a bubbly concoction. Leave to sit for about 5 minutes, and then scrub the toilet making sure the solution reaches all the stains in the toilet. Give your toilet a flush and wallah, you’re left with a stain free toilet!
